This amazing illustration taken from a book printed in 1507, depicts Benkei looking up at Gojo Bridge toward Minamoto no Yoshitsune after being knocked from the bridge into the river. The image should manifest the feeling of when knocked down, you must rise up again, even if defeated to carry on. Had Benkei submitted to personal defeat and shame, much of the rich history between these two warriors would never have happened. Yes, he challenged Yoshitsune once more, and yes he lost. But in the end, their stories together were amazing and he eventually died an honorable death, on his feet and memorialized by a nation forever.
